Snickerdoodles

It’s cookie time! This childhood favorite of mine has an unclear origin, but is often believed to be of German origin; and it’s name came from the German word Schneckennudelm which means “snail noodles.” There is nothing that resembles a noodle (or a snail) to me when I make this drop cookie. All I know is eating them makes me happy.

  • 1/4 cups butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup plus 6 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp soda
  • pinch of salt

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1-1/2 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F

In a large mixing bowl, using electric mixer on medium speed, mix margarine, shortening, sugar and egg.

Add flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Mix Well.

Using teaspoon amounts, shape dough into balls.

In a small bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar. Roll each ball dough in cinnamon mixture.

Place 2 inches apart on un-greased cookie sheet.

Bake 8-10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Makes 3 dozen.
